Warning: There's a new scam
out to get you!
I consider myself pretty savvy about scams but I fell for this one.
I'm passing this information on to you so you don't go through the
hassle I went through.
 If
you receive a message warning that looks similar to this one, close the
window. If you get others, the website address given will change
with each warning. This is not a ligament windows warning.
It's a scam! If you get these types of messages you can download a
program called Shoot the Messenger which will stop this type of popup.
 It
does not harm any of your other messenger options, or the litigate
windows warnings.
I downloaded the "fix" and paid $29.95 for it. It did not stop
the warnings. Since my computer has been having minor problems
since January 1st, I figured I'd just go ahead and reformat the hard
drive and reinstall everything.
I had problems with the reformat and ended up calling my computer
repair guru, Geoff from
Basic
Computers and after he got a clean install of the operating system
on my machine I proceeded to start reinstalling programs and there came
the warnings again. This time I made screen shots of them and sent
them to Geoff. That's when I learned they were fake and he sent me
the repair program to "Shoot
the Messenger."
This little scam caused me three days of downtime for my business.
Hopefully I can save you that amount of lost time and money. -
